Photography practice #1
Starting an experiment...
Hello, what’s this? Read below. But first, a little dose of light and color.
At the beginning of November, I started practicing photography after almost a year off. To me, “practicing” means noticing what catches my eye, pausing to photograph it with some attention to feeling, and taking time to curate the results. There was an internal block that gradually dissolved, and it’s felt good to come back.
Coming back to my practice brought me up against another familiar block: why and how to share my photos. The “why” feels easier than in the past: because I enjoy making them and looking at them, and because I like when we share the things we enjoy. This Substack is an experiment with the “how”. I like the ubiquity of email. I like having a public web page. I like my own Substack subscriptions. I like that it’s free. I like that there aren’t ads. I like the flexibility of a post. I like having a place to write.
The name “Brian’s Quiet Spot” comes from: feeling a theme of “quiet” in my photos; the desire to have a quiet home for them; a play on the word “spot” that references place, awareness, and technique.
Thank you for reading. I don’t know what’s next, but I have some ideas. For now, you can see more of my current and past practice at bhrutledge.com/photos.
